When Procedure is Used

Women who have large breasts may undergo this procedure to alleviate back and nerve pain, to improve their ability to be active and wear bras comfortably, and/or to improve their self-image. While women can have the procedure at any age, many wait until after they have children if they are planning. Women who are overweight may find that a change in diet and exercise also alleviates some of the problems caused by having large breasts.

During Surgery

You will have a general anesthesia so that you are relaxed and asleep throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision around the areola, or slightly darker area around your nipple, and down the front of your breast. Often, the nipple and areola will remain attached as fat and other tissue are removed. Sometimes, though, they are removed and reattached if the change in breast size would make their resulting position too low or otherwise out of place. The surgeon will also shape the breast tissue that remains to give you as natural an appearance as possible.

Risks

The risk of complications is very low. However, potential risks might include

  • temporary bruising
  • scarring
  • allergic reaction to medications
  • numbness in the nipples
  • difficulty or inability to breastfeed

Benefits

  • elimination of or decrease in back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • velimination of chronic irritation or rash under the breasts
  • ability to participate more easily in physical activities
  • improved self-image and confidence
