  When to Stop Eating and Drinking


Unless otherwise instructed

   These guidelines are for general purposes only. Your primary care physician or surgeon may require you to follow an alternative plan, which we request that you follow.

Quantity: Although the below guidelines allow you to eat and drink the day of your procedure, limit the amount you ingest.

After midnight (12AM) the day of procedure

STOP tobacco and smokeless tobacco products including

  • Chewing tobacco
  • Cigarettes
  • Vaping products

6 Hours prior to procedure

NOTHING to eat including:

  • any food
  • candy
  • mints
  • gum.

4 Hours prior to procedure

STOP drinking liquids including:

  • Water
  • Juice
  • Milk
  • coffee
  • soda

Diabetics

Monitor Glucose Levels

Continue to monitor your glucose level throughout the day as normal. On the day of your procedure, if your blood glucose level is greater than 200 mg/dL notify Yellowstone Surgery Center as soon as possible. Your procedure may be canceled or postponed.


 About Medications


The below medications need to be STOPPED prior to your procedure. If it is prescribed medication, you must have permission from your prescribing physician to stop taking it before your procedure.

7-10 Days prior to procedure stop taking:

  • Aggrenox (Aspirin / Dipyridamole)
  • Plavix (Clopidogrel)
  • Pletal (Cilostazol)
  • Ticlid (Tyclopidine)
  • Brilinta

5-7 Days prior to procedure stop taking:

  • Coumadin (Warfarin)
  • Effient (Prasugrel)
  • Pradaxa (Dabigatran)

3-5 Days prior to procedure stop taking:

  • Celebrex (Celecoxib)
  • Eliquis (Apixaban)
  • Mobic (Meloxicam)
  • Xarelto (Rivaroxaban)

3 Days (minimum) prior to procedure stop taking:

  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
  • Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Midol)
  • Toradol (Ketorolac)
  • Turmeric (Curcumin)

24 hours prior to procedure stop taking:

  • Lovenox (Enoxaparin)

Prescriptions and Pain Control

You may take any medication that is not listed in the “Stop These Medications” listing on the morning of your procedure with a sip of water, unless otherwise advised by your physician.

Blood Pressure, Cardiac, and Anti-Seizure Medications

It’s important that you take blood pressure, cardiac or anti-seizure medications unless otherwise advised by your physician.
