When Procedure is Used

Achilles tendons usually tear as a result of a strong physical force, such as what happens when athletes suddenly accelerate or pivot. The separate pieces of the tendon will not grow back together on their own, which is why surgical repair is usually necessary.

During Surgery

You will most likely be given sedation to keep you relaxed and spinal anesthesia so that you won’t feel anything from the waist down. General anesthesia is also an option. The surgeon will then either make several small incisions along the lower back of your leg or will make one longer incision. In some cases, the pieces of your tendon will be sewn back together, but your surgeon may also need to remove another tendon from your foot to connect the torn pieces of Achilles tendon.
